7 December 2007 Vote Connect2The Big Lottery Fund has £50m to give away in a programme called the People's 50 Million, and rather than using the old-fashioned principle of getting People Who Know Stuff to sit down in a room and make the Right Decision, they're being modish and asking people to vote by phone. There are four contenders, and I'm exhorting you to vote for Sustrans, the cycle route and sustainable transport people. Their scheme, Connect2, aims to build 79 individual new walking and cycling links around Britain - bridges (lots of them), tunnels, new paths, etc. All of them will make it easier for local communities not to use the car; some of them will improve sections of the National Cycle Network; this one, which I'm particularly rooting for, will also open up the first section of the Melton Mowbray Navigation, for which I founded the restoration project 10 years ago. Many of the schemes have been suggested by local cycling and walking groups, so they really are much-needed facilities. You can vote:
Over the past three years I've become more and more impressed with Sustrans' work as we explore the National Cycle Network. It's taken us places we'd never have thought of visiting, down some wonderful country lanes, old railway paths and improved bridleways. If the Connect2 schemes are even a quarter as good, they're worth having. The Lottery people are tracking for multiple votes by IP address and phone number, so if you can, vote five times: work phone, home phone, mobile phone; work Internet, home Internet. Comments
