22 February 2006 Hatching plansI'm in a project-hatching mode at the moment, with plans for a cycling route wiki, Geowiki 2, and all manner of stuff. Here's this evening's bit of fun. At Stonesfield, Anna uses an interactive whiteboard system called SMART Board. The SMART Notebook software is a nifty, but simple, package that lets kids drag shapes around the whiteboard (and they do a Mac version, too, so fair play to them). I downloaded a couple of sample files from the Oxfordshire LEA ICT website earlier, unzipped them, and opened them up in a text editor, just to see what I'd find. Now here's the fun bit: they're SVG. Well, apart from a couple of extraneous XML tags hither and thither. Edit out said extraneous bits, drag and drop into Safari (or Illustrator, or whatever), et voila: Ok. Fun but not enormously useful, because you can't drag the pics around. But it just so happens that, the other weekend, I was playing around with Ming and built this - a very basic bit of ActionScript that lets you click anywhere on the canvas, create a new text box, type in it, and drag it around. It'd work just as well for images. So if you can import the SVG file into Ming - a bit like this chap has done - well, you can see where I'm heading. It'd probably involve SAX, which I believe actually comes with a modified version of the GPL that says "we accept no liability if trying to use this module makes your head explode", but no matter. I think this one's going to be quite enjoyable. Comments |
