14 March 2005 MeetingsI spend about half my working day in meetings. Meetings exist primarily to disseminate clue. A wise man once said Knowledge Reigns Supreme Over Nearly Everyone, but unfortunately, in your average meeting it takes a very, very long time for knowledge to prevail over FUD. No, scrub that. The biggest problem in a typical meeting isn't FUD, it's general cluelessness. There are better ways to spread clue. The written word, chiefly. Unfortunately most people don't have time to read and understand the written word, largely because they spend most of their time in meetings. But you can spend an hour in a meeting and transmit (or pick up) the same amount of clue that could be communicated by just one cogent paragraph in, say, the Independent. Why? Because if you read an Independent article by, say, Robert Fisk, (a) you have engaged your brain from the first sentence, (b) you come to the article with the knowledge that this bloke has been in Beirut for at least 20 years and actually understands the subject. In other words, the world would be a much better place if we trusted qualified people. Unfortunately we live in an age where, for example, the Treasury insists on setting targets for things about which it knows nothing (at some point I'll invite Anna to make a guest posting about e-learning credits )... when much better results would be achieved if they would only entrust the decisions to the people who are actually paid to know about this. Anyway. The point I was going to make, before rambling, is that committee meetings for voluntary organisations make you appreciate that meetings at work really aren't that bad. Tonight was my last PCC meeting. Thank fuck for that. Today I got the new It's Jo And Danny rerelease ('Lank-Haired Girl to Bearded Boy') from Amazon. It's wonderful, especially 'Arkle', which goes 'Arkle arkle arkle arkle' like a backwards folky version of 'Lager lager lager lager'. Comments"the world would be a much better place if we trusted qualified people" Couldn't agree more, old chap. The trouble with democracy is that it leads people to believe that their opinion on any subject is just as valuable as anyone else's. Posted by The Mortal Wombat on 15.3.05 09:56 Argh. Why didn't you warn me that your commenting system wouldn't allow html formatting tags?! Could you edit the last comment appropriately and delete this, please?
