16 December 2004 New, popular and sexyAt last. I've now got the complete set of New Popular Edition maps of England and Wales... scanned in full colour, high resolution, and looking wonderful. There are 139 maps in all: that's the 1in New Popular Edition (from around 1950), a complete set of 0.25in maps of the same period (covering Scotland as well as England and Wales), plus maps of Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, Guernsey and Jersey. Some of them are from perfect flat originals, some from folded paper (or occasionally cloth), a few even have pen and pencil marks on - all conveys a bit of character. Even as compressed PDFs, the complete set of scans takes up 25GB. PDFshrink is now doing its level best to make them fit on a single CD, reduced to 200dpi with medium JPEG compression. They still look pretty good: What's so great about the New Popular Edition? It dates from a particularly interesting time. The railway network was still at its peak; the canal network had by no means reached its nadir; but by the same token, the A and B road system was already well established. So there's a mass of information in there. The maps are drawn on the National Grid. This makes it easy to copy or trace information and overlay it on other sources. And best of all, Ordnance Survey map copyright lasts for 50 years after the year of first publication. All 139 of these scanned maps were published before 1954. This makes it probably the single best royalty-free source in existence for UK cartographers. More to follow! CommentsGlad to see a plug for Wideopen Plant! Anyone who hasn't been should get on a train to Twizel. Posted by The Mortal Wombat on 17.12.04 10:04 Lovely! OOI, why did you choose PDF instead of (say) PNG? Did you somehow manage to convert the bitmap scans to vectors? Posted by David Cantrell on 20.12.04 11:31 Sadly, no - it's the format that the scanning bureau work in. The files are actually 'Acrobat Touch-Up Image Format', which appears to be a raster subset of PDF. By coincidence, PDF is a good format for running a batch compression utility over, courtesy of PDFshrink. The other advantage of PDF is that practically everyone has a pan-and-zoom viewer for it. What I'm not sure about is how easy it is to convert PDF to PNG/JPEG/whatever on non-Apple platforms. Under OS X you can use Preview (or GraphicConverter, or whatever). You can use Photoshop (even Elements) on Windows, but not everyone owns that. Linux? Not sure. Posted by Richard on 22.12.04 11:14 Well done to you who live in Britain! I still have an old one inch map of north Wales somewhere at home in UK. Now when do we get the same for Germany?.... :) Posted by Jeremy Stocks on 9.6.05 08:11 Hi Richard, will you be placing the scanned maps in the public domain or making them available under a creative commons licence? If so we (Bristol Wireless - http://bristolwireless.net) would almost certainly be prepared to host them for you, even at 25GB.
Posted by Peter Ferne on 12.9.05 14:30 whats teh status of teh scans? have you released them to the public? have a host for them or are you inetersted in making them available publically? keen to know :) Posted by james on 29.9.05 11:12 A full set of scanned images of the New Popular edition of the OS 1" maps of Great Britain is ALREADY freely accessible on the web, assembled into a single continuous geo-referenced map of the whole country. It forms part of the Vision of Britain through Time web site, funded by the National Lottery: www.VisionOfBritain.org.uk/maps The maps are used partly as backdrops for other information, like historic boundaries and census statistics, but that URL takes you to the maps themselves. What you see initially is the "New Map of the British Isles" (London: Geographia, 1921). As you zoom in, the intermediate mapping is the Ordnance Survey 1 : 633 600 maps from 1904. The system also hold two other complete sets of 1" maps covering GB, the Ordnance Survey First Series from the 19th century and the Land Utilisation Survey of Great Britain from the 1930s -- once you have zoomed in to a particular area, you can easily switch between sets. Details of the various maps in the system are available here: http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/footer/doc_text_for_title.jsp?topic=sources&seq=5 The system is designed to show you maps of a particular area, rather than down-load them.
